Deze vrij grote spaniel is een echte all-round drijfhond. Door zijn snelheid bijzonder geschikt voor het opstoten van fazanten. De Springers zijn zeer goede apporteurs, die ook met het waterwerk geen enkel probleem hebben. Een vol haas kunnen ze wel dragen, maar een Springer is zeker niet de eerste keus op een echte hazenjacht. Een Engelse Springer kan bruin-bont of zwart-bont zijn. Het ras is bijzonder populair bij jagers.
De Springer Spaniel lijkt op de Cocker Spaniel, hoewel hij wat groter is. Daarom werden ze tot ver in de negentiende eeuw nog als één ras beschouwd, hoewel de beide soorten al te zien zijn op schilderijen vanaf het midden van de zeventiende eeuw. Het is een sterke hond van gemiddelde grootte die gebouwd is op uithoudingsvermogen en dol is op lichaamsbeweging- of dat nu het opstoten van wild in dicht struikgewas is of het achterna rennen van een bal op een speelwei. Het ras dankt zijn naam aan het opstoten ("springing") van wild bij de jacht en heeft daarbij een reputatie van veelzijdigheid opgebouwd als uitblinker bij de jacht, het "springing" en het apporteren, zowel te land als in het water. Ook bij de gehoorzaamheidstraining doen ze het goed. Er zijn twee fokrichtingen, de "show" lijn, met over het algemeen wat forsere honden, en de "jacht" lijn. Ook in temperament is er wat verschil tussen beide lijnen.
Hoewel Springers best in de stad kunnen aarden zijn het geen honden voor eigenaars die geen gelegenheid hebben om tenminste dagelijks een lange wandeling (minstens een uur) met ze te maken waarbij ze ook los van de lijn kunnen rennen. Bovendien vraagt ook hun vacht enige verzorging, zoals borstelen en kammen en het verwijderen van klitten en moeten ze van tijd tot tijd getrimd worden. Ze leren snel, zijn niet éénkennig, houden van kinderen en willen hun baas graag een plezier doen- al kunnen ze af en toe ook best koppig zijn. Als ze echter verveeld raken kunnen ze, net als de meeste andere honden, destructieve neigingen gaan vertonen. Het zijn echt honden die motivatie nodig hebben en graag geprezen worden. Naast lichaamsbeweging hebben ze ook geestelijk veel aktiviteit nodig! Voor een baas die de aandacht er voor over heeft kan een Engelse Springer Spaniel een fantastische, sportieve kameraad zijn.

The English Springer Spaniel is a dog for all seasons, an endearing energetic companion for the owner who is willing to give it the time that it deserves. Highly thought of by the police as sniffer dogs, well known in the field trial world for their tireless enthusiasm, many a rough shooting man’s friend, a joy to behold when moving round the show ring in their own distinctive style, a wonderful family pet and a good companion for young and old alike. Do not run away with the idea though that the breed is a paragon of virtue, the breed standard states "Symmetrically built, compact, strong, merry, active. Highest on the leg and raciest in build of all British land Spaniels". Strong, merry and active are three important words here and it should be remembered that this is a breed that was developed to work, therefore Springer's benefit from being trained, be it for a formal discipline or merely to take its place in the family home. All puppies need time and patience and Springer's need as much as any other, perhaps a little more than some of the less energetic breeds, but they will reward you with love and devotion, not to mention a great deal of fun, if you give them the right grounding. They are equally well suited to living in the town or country providing that you have a well fenced garden and once they are grown, the time to exercise them both in body and mind. As with any other breed of dog English Springer Spaniels are not recommended to anyone who is planning to be out all day leaving the dog on its own; dogs are pack animals and therefore do not take kindly to solitary confinement.

Do remember that English Springer Spaniels vary considerably in size and appearance, dependant on the purpose for which they are bred; Show Springer's have been bred with conformation as one of the primary considerations whereas Field Trial Springer's have been bred with working ability being the main concern. It is important that you decide on your own personal requirements from your dog and then purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder whose dogs fit your requirements as closely as possible. As with any other breed there are a few hereditary problems in the breed which you should be aware of prior to purchasing a puppy. It should be quite easy to find a reputable breeder who will be only to happy to discuss these with you and whose stock will not suffer from them. There is a neurological storage disease called Fucosidosis which effects the nervous system but is easily diagnosed and is rapidly being brought under control by responsible breeders who have had there dogs tested prior to breeding with them. The Kennel Club and the B.V.A have a joint scheme for eye testing English Springer's for multifocal retinal dysplasia, total retinal dysplasia, generalized progressive retinal atrophy and confirmed cases are not common. The same body runs a scheme for x-raying the hips of English Springer Spaniels but yet again this does not seem to be something that causes a problem in the breed in this country. |
