Mountain Cur
The European gene pool splashes shockingly on the Mountain Cur. Many hounds brought over with immigrants to America trysted with native curs.
This unsurly, rather sordid combination of canine produced an offbeat hound able to adjust to the exact rhythms of the polka to the untappable beats of the Indian war dance.
The historic Ohio River Valley prowler is believed to possess a whiff of the Indian Cur's genetic smoke, in addition to the influence of other hounds and herders.
He is noted for his treeing prowess but many are superb trailers as well.
(Andrew De Prisco and James Johnson, 1990. T.F.H. Publications)

The Mountain Cur was declared a breed in 1957 with the organization of the Original Mountain Cur Club of America, which is now known as the Original Mountain Cur Breeders Association (O.M.C.B.A.). At that time, dogs of this type could only be found in very remote, rural areas and there were no organized breeding records.
This club was able to locate and register the original-type Mountain Curs. This included the: McConnell, Stephens, Ledbetter, Arline and York strains. On the last weekend of September 1991 a group of men and women met at Robert and Lou Ella Kemmer's house and formed a new association that registered a strain of Mountain Cur that became know as the Kemmer Stock Mountain Cur. These Mountain Curs were also bred from the above-mentioned lines. The best was bred to the best, line bred, then later inbred to preserve the traits they desired.
They are registered with the Kemmer Stock Mountain Cur Breeders Association (K.S.B.A.). The O.M.C.B.A. and K.S.B.A. are the two U.K.C. recognized Mountain Cur Breeders Associations. Today these dogs are used on squirrel, raccoon, and all types of big game.
